A unit of the Provisional IRA Belfast Brigade launched an attack on the pub, which was frequented by Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF) members as well as civilians. Four Protestant civilians and one UVF member were killed. Alongside the five people who lost their lives, over 50 people suffered injuries and the building itself was eventually destroyed.
